My name is Kritsada Darasiri, a second-year doctoral student at the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology. My research interests include ship control, simulation modeling, and machine learning. I am currently focused on developing deep neural network (DNN)-based control systems for the automatic berthing of ships. Residentship Overview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I participated in a residentship at BEMAC through the Marine AI Matching Week, organized by the WISE Program for the Development of AI Professionals in the Marine Industry at the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology. The residentship started from November 2024 to April 2025, with weekly participation over a six-month period. During the residentship, I analyzed IoT-based ship data, focusing particularly on berthing and unberthing operations using real-world data. Additionally, I investigated tuning of ship motion simulation using actual ship data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Additionally, before the residentship began, BEMAC kindly invited me to visit its headquarters in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture. I had the opportunity to tour the company\u2019s factories and gain a deeper insight into BEMAC\u2019s products and their significant role in the maritime industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residentship duties<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I participated in two technical projects during the residentship. The first project involved analyzing real ship maneuvering data from large datasets such as AIS and IoT to identify characteristic control patterns. The second project focused on integrating actual operation data into the ship motion simulation validation and parameter tuning. The following steps were carried out using Python.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First of all, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to BEMAC Tokyo Data Lab team and my mentor. Although I wasn\u2019t familiar with analyzing real-world data, my mentor patiently taught me everything from the ground up. I am truly grateful to have had the opportunity to work with someone so knowledgeable and inspiring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, I was concerned about the language barrier, as Japanese is mainly used in the workplace. However, once I began working here, I realized that language was never an obstacle. My mentor explained everything clearly, guided me through technical tasks, and continuously encouraged me, eventually leading to the publication of a research paper. Achieving this within just six months was truly incredible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While my interaction with other team members was limited, I could feel their expertise and kindness through the valuable tips and suggestions they shared. Their support, even in small moments, greatly enriched my learning experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
